IN
1933, directly following
the repeal of Prohibition, The Cardoza family
opened the Union Wine Shop on Union Street in
New Bedford, one of the first liquor licenses
awarded in the state. In 1936 the small, family-run
business moved over the bridge to Fairhaven
and quickly became a destination. Over the years,
the Cardoza family strengthened their store’s
reputation as the place for fine wines and spirits.
Richard Cardoza, grandson of the original owner,
purchased the business in 1997. In just three
years he expanded the company to include two
new locations, North Dartmouth and Fall River.
This third generation family company continues
to reinvent how the wine & spirits business
is done in Massachusetts.
The three retail stores focus on fine wines,
spirits and exceptional service. With an eclectic
selection of beverages and a friendly staff,
buying wines at Cardoza’s is not just
a purchase, but also a journey. Before you begin
your journey to buy wine, the staff will happily
meet with you; there could be a short history
lesson, a discussion on geography and grape
varieties, or a simple “What’s for
dinner?” to ensure that you get the perfect
pairing. Never one to sit still, Richard is
constantly thinking of new ways to serve his
clients.
Cardoza's “Top Shelf” Beverage Catering
serves over 30,000 guests at private parties,
weddings and fundraising events each year throughout
the region.
A 40-foot Luxury Limousine Coach called The
“Voyage” was added to the company
last year as a vehicle to entertain clients
as well as to rent out for weddings and nights
on the town. These two additions to the company
are now known as Cardoza’s “Spirited
Entertainment”.
Cardoza’s Wine & Spirits is also one
of the Southcoast’s largest supporters
of local charities helping to raise more than
$1,000,000.00 for local non-profit organizations
each year with defined focus.
Some organizations that will benefit from the
Company’s sponsorships this year include:
SouthCoast Hospital Group, UMASS Dartmouth,
Bristol Community College, Child & Family
Services, New
Bedford Whaling Museum, WHALE, Zeiterion
Theatre, New
Bedford Symphony Orchestra, NB Festival
Theatre, Buttonwood Park Zoo, Lloyd Center,
DNRT, Marion Art Center, The Jimmy Fund and
Boys & Girls Club of Fall River to name
a few.
